The back story.

A police report of the incident written by Officer Carlos Figueroa, who responded to the call with Crowley, says Crowley was already in the house when he walked in. The report says Crowley had asked Gates for some identification and Gates shouted that he would not give any information and called the sergeant a racist.

According to the report, Gates then yelled, “This is what happens to black men in America.” When Crowley tried to calm him down, Gates shouted, “You don’t know who you’re messing with.”

The report continues that the shouting went on after Gates and the officers walked out onto the front porch. When Gates allegedly wouldn’t cooperate or calm down, Crowley arrested him.

Crowley told the radio station that he asked Gates to step outside because he didn’t know who Gates was, and he was alone and didn’t know if his safety was compromised.

“I had no other motive than to ensure my safety, or he could’ve been the homeowner who was unaware that there were people in his house unauthorized. I just didn’t know,” Crowley said

Gates refused to show his ID and went off on a belligerent tirade till Sgt. James Crowley decided to charge him with disorderly conduct. He should of been thanking Sgt. Crowley for protecting his home not getting all defensive and slinging charges of racism against him. What a world class tool. At the onset it appeared that someone was breaking into his home. What was the policeman to do ignore it? Heh. Maybe next time they will and the man who cried racism will be the one who wishes he would of not acted like such an ass. For not unlike the boy who cried wolf people may not be willing to listen.

The Cambridge cop prominent Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. claims is a racist gave a dying Reggie Lewis mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in a desperate bid to save the Celtics [team stats] superstar’s life 16 years ago Monday.

“I wasn’t working on Reggie Lewis the basketball star. I wasn’t working on a black man. I was working on another human being,” Sgt. James Crowley, in an exclusive interview with the Herald, said of the forward’s fatal heart attack July 27, 1993, at age 27 during an off-season practice at Brandeis University, where Crowley was a campus police officer.

Some people were saying ‘There’s the guy who killed Reggie Lewis’ afterward. I was broken-hearted. I cried for many nights,” he said.

Yesterday, Lewis’ widow, Donna Lewis, was floored to learn the embattled father of three on the thin blue line of a national debate on racism in America was the same man so determined to rescue her husband.

“That’s incredible,” Lewis, 44, exclaimed. “It’s an unfortunate situation. Hopefully, it can resolve itself. The most important thing is peace.”

Gates, 58, an acclaimed scholar on black history and a PBS documentarian, (that explains a lot) went on the attack against Crowley on Tuesday, demanding he apologize for arresting him for disorderly conduct last Thursday while investigating a reported break-in at his home. Gates, returning from a trip, was seen by a Malden woman trying to force his front door open. Police alleged he initially refused to identify himself.

Though he harbors no “ill feelings toward the professor,” a calm, resolute Crowley said no mea culpa will be forthcoming.

“I just have nothing to apologize for,” he said. “It will never happen.”

Attorney Charles Ogletree, Gates’ close friend and fellow Harvard savant, told the Herald, “It’s regrettable and unfortunate that the officer feels that way, and I do hope that some progress will be made in healing this wound.”

Gates, who upon his arrest allegedly bellowed to a gathering crowd on Ware Street, “This is what happens to black men in America!” believes he was targeted by Crowley – whom he called a “rogue” cop – because of his race. [...]

Update:

Patrolman Carlos Figueroa says he and Sgt. James Crowley were investigating a report of a burglary at Gates’ home near Harvard University, and they needed to be sure everyone was in the house legally. He said that’s why Crowley asked Gates for his identification.

Figueroa said Gates shouted “No, I will not!” He also says Gates was shouting at Crowley, calling him a racist and saying, “This is what happens to black men in America!”

Crowley teaches racial profiling class at academy

Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley, the cop at the center of a firestorm over the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., has taught a racial profiling class at the Lowell Police Academy for five years.

His academy class, which he teaches with a black police officer, instructs about 60 police cadets per year who spend 12 hours in the classroom, said Lowell Police Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

“He’s a very professional police officer and he’s a good role model,” Fleming said. “Former police commissioner Ronny Watson, who is a person of color, hand-picked Sgt. Crowley. … I presume because he would be the most qualified and most professional. He’s a very good instructor. He gets very high reviews by the students.” [...]

Who is the racist?

The Gates who greeted Crowley was a racist. And I know, because the professor said so himself.

By his own admission, Gates didn’t just blame the incident on the fact that he is “a black man.” He also added the accusatory question, “Are you doing this because you’re a white police officer?”

According to an eyewitness quoted in the Herald yesterday, when police asked him for ID, Gates started yelling, “I’m a Harvard professor . . . You believe white women over black men.”

Not that Gates is without compassion. “Crowley should beg my forgiveness,” he told one reporter.

It is Gates who should apologize to Crowley.

Henry Gates judged Sgt Crowley by the color of his skin not the content of his character. He should be ashamed.

Unfortunately that fact is likely lost on ‘race obsessed’ Gates.

Obama is admonishing us and telling us it’s a teachable moment. Teachable for whom?
If anyone ought to learn something it ought to be him. First to stop pulling the race card at every turn. Secondly, he should not to jump to conclusions and blame whitey. Thirdly, he must stop this incitement to divide the American people based on a fallacious, racist narrative.

Obama is still way off base! He continues to be very unclear of ” all the facts”. Sgt Crowley did NOT pull Gates from his home. Gates followed Crowley outside ranting and raving all the way. Does Obama continue to butcher the facts because he hasn’t bothered to read the police report? [roll eyes] Or did he, but still wants to spread misinformation?

Obama’s conciliatory moves marked an abrupt shift from Friday morning, when White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed a suggestion that the backlash from police groups could be distressing to the White House, given that Obama has enjoyed a positive relationship with the law enforcement community.

“I think the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed McCain,” Gibbs fired back at reporters, referring to Obama’s Republican opponent in the 2008 election. “If I’m not mistaken.”

Being prepped and speaking off of the top of your head are entirely different. Obama being prepped is far worse than his speaking before he thought things through. Unbelievable! His words were intentional.
