WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior State Department official said Tuesday he’s sorry for a joking remark he made about Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi that prompted Libya to threaten diplomatic retaliation unless he apologized.

Chief department spokesman P.J. Crowley said he regretted any offense caused by his response to a reporter’s question about Gadhafi’s recent call for a holy war against Switzerland. Libya said last week it might take action against American business interests there if a formal apology was not made.

“I understand that my personal comments were perceived as a personal attack,” Crowley told reporters. “The comments do not reflect U.S. policy and were not intended to offend. I apologize if they were taken that way. I regret that my comments have become an obstacle to further progress in our bilateral relationship.”

Crowley had already said his offhand remark questioning the “sense” of Gadhafi’s speech to the U.N. General Assembly last year had not been intended as a personal attack. He met with Libya’s ambassador to the U.S. late last week to try to clear the matter up, but he had not apologized until Tuesday.

He made the remark in question on Feb. 26 when he was asked what the U.S. thought of Gadhafi’s appeal for “jihad” against Switzerland after the country banned construction of new mosque minarets. Crowley said he was reminded of Gadhafi’s lengthy speech at the United Nations last September in which the Libyan leader ripped pages from the U.N. Charter.

“I saw that report and it just brought me back to a day in September, one of the more memorable sessions of the U.N. General Assembly that I can recall: lots of words and lots of papers flying all over the place, not necessarily a lot of sense,” he said. [...]

So a truth spoken about a whack job Muslim leader is verboten but threats of jihad are okey dokey. Got it.

Dead on.  If Gadhafi does not wish to feel as if he is the butt of a joke, then he should think twice about acting like a blithering fool in public. If possible.

Never fear America, Libya has accepted Crowley’s apology all is well in the warm and fuzzy cocoon of appeasment.

Final thought, I would of like to have heard Crowley’s response to the question had he stayed on topic.

DUBLIN (AP) — Police in Ireland on Tuesday arrested seven people over an alleged plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog.

Irish police said four men and three women were detained in raids across the south of the country.

The force says the arrests were part of an investigation into a “conspiracy to murder an individual in another jurisdiction.”

The force offered the statement in response to a question about Lars Vilks, whom Britain’s Press Association news agency identified as the target.

Police said the suspects were aged from their mid-20s to their late 40s. It did not identify their nationality.

Police say the investigation involved law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and several European countries.

Al Qaeda in Iraq put a $100,000 bounty on Vilks’ head after a Swedish newspaper ran his picture of Muhammad’s head on a dog’s body in 2007. He was put under police protection and moved to a secret location in Sweden.

Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.

Vilks is not the first cartoonist to have received death threats for drawings of the prophet.

Kurt Westergaard, a Danish cartoonist who in 2005 depicted Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban, also received death threats. In January, a Somali man was arrested after breaking into his home in western Denmark armed with an ax.

But to the FBI agents who had been tracking her every move from at least as early as July last year, she was potentially a dangerous would-be terrorist intent on martyrdom and using the aliases Jihad Jane and Fatima LaRose.

Today, an indictment was unsealed accusing her of plotting to murder a Swedish man in order to frighten “the whole Kufar (nonbeliever) world”.

Although the indictment does not name him, her intended victim is reported to have been Lars Vilks, a cartoonist who drew a satirical picture of the head of the prophet Muhammad on top of a dog’s body.

US media have reported that LaRose’s case is linked to the arrest in Ireland on Tuesday of seven suspected plotters from Algeria, Croatia, Palestine, Libya and the US. Al-Qaida had placed a $100,000 (£67,000) bounty on Vilks’s head.

The arrest of LaRose, 46, has been seized on by US national security officials as a warning that terrorist groups want to recruit white Americans to circumvent tight travel controls. [...]

DENVER – Jamie Paulin-Ramirez was a straight-A nursing student when she abruptly left Colorado last fall with her 6-year-old son and turned up in Ireland, where her parents say she was arrested this week in an alleged plot to assassinate a Swedish cartoonist.

Christine Mott of Leadville told The Associated Press that she was told of the arrest of her 31-year-old daughter in the case by the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies.

She said that Jamie Paulin-Ramirez told her family after she left last September that she went to Ireland with her 6-year-old son and married an Algerian whom she met online.

Irish authorities this week announced the arrest of seven Muslims in the alleged plot, only identifying them as three Algerians, a Libyan, a Palestinian, a Croatian and an American woman married to one of the Algerians.

They were arrested Tuesday, hours before U.S. authorities unveiled a terror indictment against Colleen LaRose, 46, of Philadelphia, who bills herself as “Jihad Jane.” [...]

Protesting Indonesian students deface an Obama mask

AKARTA, Indonesia – Scores of Islamic students staged protests outside Jakarta’s parliament and in at least three other major Indonesian cities on Friday against President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to this predominantly Muslim country.

The students carried banners branding Obama as an enemy of Islam and an imperialist in downtown Jakarta as well as in the provincial capitals Padang, Yogyakarta and Surabaya.

They also threw shoes at large pictures of Obama’s head. An Iraqi journalist was sentenced to a year in prison for throwing his shoes at U.S. President George W. Bush during a news conference in Baghdad in 2008.

Protest organizer Ahmad Irhamul Fikri, spokesman for the Coordinating Board for Campus Proselytizing Institute, said bigger rallies will be staged next Friday in more Indonesian cities ahead of Obama’s March 20-22 visit. [...]

Taking it a step further, Hizbut Tahrir (a radical Islamic political movement) is demanding the Indonesian government not accept Obama’s visit. If their demands are not met, they will deploy more than the initial 5,000 planned protesters.

Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia said Sunday it would deploy 5,000 supporters to stage a rally against the visit of US President Barrack Obama to Indonesia later this month.

East Java HTI chairman Khoiri Sulaiman said his organization hoped that the government would not to accept Obama visit.

“This protest is the best thing we can do to voice our demand. We will deploy more supporters if our demand is rejected,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
